Dominic Knighta
Disco Boy

When: Thursday 14th May

Where: QLD Irish Club, 175 Elizabeth St, Brisbane

Tickets: $15 $12 concession $10 bulk 6+

Dominic Knight is one of the founders of The Chaser comedy group, and writers
for ABC-TV’s The Chaser’s War on Everything. His first novel is either a highly
original and cleverly observed work of fiction, or a thinly–veiled whinge about his
own life. You decide.

Disco Boy
Paul Johnson has devoted the majority of his adult life to avoiding the corporate rat-race. He spends his
weekends DJing at 21st birthday parties, and no-one can mix ‘Celebration’ into ‘Come On Eileen’ quite
like him. But while he knows how to apply the jumper-leads to even the direst of parties, he can’t quite
get his life started. He feels trapped in his job, he lives with his parents, and spends most of his spare
time hanging out with corporate lawyers.

What Paul wants (what he really, really wants) is to play his own music instead of
The Village People’s. But as anyone who’s pushed Pause on their own lives can
attest, pressing the Play button again can be very difficult.

A romantic comedy that’s equal parts bitingly cynical and naïvely idealistic, DISCO
BOY is a fantastic first novel by the very talented Dominic Knight.

What job did your sixteen-your-old self choose for you?

We spend most of our waking lives at work — in occupations often chosen by our unthinking sixteen-year-old selves.

And yet we rarely ask ourselves how we got there or what it might mean for us.

Equally intrigued by work's pleasures and its pains, Alain de Botton heads out into the under-charted worlds of the office, the factory, the fishing fleet and the logistics centre, ears and eyes open to the beauty, interest and sheer strangeness of the modern workplace.

Along the way he tries to answer some of the most urgent questions we can ask about work: Why do we do it? What makes it pleasurable? What is its meaning? And why do we daily exhaust not only ourselves but also the planet?

With a philosophical eye and his characteristic combination of wit and wisdom, Alain de Botton leads us on a journey around a deliberately eclectic range of occupations, from rocket science to biscuit manufacture, accountancy to art – in search of what make jobs either fulfilling or soul-destroying too often ignored and yet as central to us as our love lives.

Tickets: $15, concession $12, bulk purchase (6+) $10 Call one of our bookstores to purchase.

Nick Earls alain
The True Story of Butterfish

When: Thursday 2nd  July, 6:30pm

Where: Powerhouse Brisbane - Turbine Platform, 119 Lamington St, New Farm

Tickets: Free, though bookings essential

Join much loved Brisbane author, Nick Earls, for the release of his new book, The True Story of Butterfish. This is a free event, but bookings essential. Contact us to book your place.

Filled with acute observation, humour and tenderness, Butterfish is Nick Earls at his very best.

When Annaliese Winter walks down Curtis Holland's front path and into his life, he's ill-prepared for a sixteen-year-old schoolgirl who's a confounding and seductive mixture of adult and child. After years travelling the world with his successful band, Butterfish, he's not used to having a neighbour at all, let alone one who appears unimpressed by the slightly chubby ex-rock star next door.

So when Curtis receives an invitation to dinner from Annaliese's mother, Kate, no one is more surprised than he is when he not only accepts but finds himself being drawn to this remarkably unremarkable family. Even to Mark, a sebaceous fifteen-year-old at war with his own surging adolescence.

As Curtis gets to know the Winters, he soon realises that with Kate divorced, Annaliese and Mark need a male role model in their lives, but it's hard for him to help when he's just starting to grow up himself and struggling to deal with the death of his father, and harder still when Annaliese begins to show an interest in him that is less than filial.
